The Amateur’s Answer Liner vs Coco Coir Hanging Basket Liners

The Amateur’s Answer vs Co-co Coir Hanging Basket Liners

One of the most popular materials for hanging basket liners over the last few years has been Coco Coir. So much so, that people only starting to make hanging baskets may not even know that there are other alternatives.

Here is a short guide to highlight the differences between Coco Coir Liners and The Amateur’s Answer hanging basket liner for anyone considering both options.

Material Qualities

Coco Coir is actually made from the fibres that surround the shell of a coconut, so they are a natural material for garden lovers. They are also considered very nice in appearance.

These Coco Coir hanging basket liners are quite durable and can perhaps be used in a second season. However, as with many types of hanging basket liners, you find that some materials separate too easily, and are taken by birds to line their nests. So, you may come to realise that there is not too much left of the basket to use again next year.

The Amateur’s Answer Hanging basket liner, in comparison to the Coco Coir material is also very durable. It’s a much thinner material than the coir, but is also stronger. It is earthly green in colour, so also considered attractive to look at with natural looking colouring.

In respect of material qualities, we believe the Amateurs Answer is better as it has superior strength making it last longer.

Basket Lining Preparation

The beauty about the Coco Coir hanging basket is its simplicity. These liners are generally pre-formed, so that you can just pop hanging basket liner straight into the hanging basket and fill with compost, feed and plants.

In some ways this good, but they are not the most versatile hanging basket liners, as you have to get the correct shape/size liner to fit the basket it’s intended for to get the best results.

In comparison, the Amateur’s Answer hanging basket liner is a very versatile liner, with the ability to be fitted to any kind of basket up to 16” in diameter, even widely spaced bars. It is also very easily assembled… Admittedly, not as easy as pre-formed liners but fits much better once prepared.

Planting

The two main ways of planting hanging baskets are side filling and top filling.

Top filling hanging baskets is the simplest way of filling any basket. You apply a mix of compost and feed and then apply the plants you want in the top.

These can be plants that grow up, grow out or trail right over the side of the hanging basket.

Both the Amateur’s Answer and the Coco Coir are great for top filling. Both demonstrate good drainage and moisture retention.

Side filling is definitely more of a test when it comes to creating a great basket. Affectively, this is a way creating a fuller more rounded display, such as bizzy Lizzie balls.

With the Amateur’s Answer this is a hard job made easy, with its thin but stronger material qualities allowing slots to be cut easily in the sides in order to apply plug plants, or even large cell plants (Please watch our demonstration video to be shown how).

The Coco Coir proves a lot more difficult to get right, with the thicker material harder to slice. You often find that excessive drainage is an issue.

Again, we believe that the Amateur’s Answer is the best choice liner for planting a hanging basket.

Price

Price is not always the primary concern for many hanging basket maker, but everyone likes to get value for their money.

Coconuts are generally produced in more tropical countries and the majority of the world produce comes from India and Sri Lanka. So, businesses of the UK are relying on imported materials to be able to supply to the public.

Recently we have seen the price of Coir going up and the cost of a 16” Pre-formed Coco Coir Hanging basket on a Large UK Online Marketplace is approximately £4.99 inc Postage.

In comparison, the Amateur’s Answer hanging basket liner comes in a pack of 3 and will also be delivered free for £4.99. That works out at £1.66 per basket liner!

In conclusion, we feel that the Amateurs Answer liner is the ideal choice for any hanging basket, especially when you compare it directly to the most popular liner on the market.

It is attractive to look at, with a natural looking colour blending seamlessly into your garden. It is durable and re-usable in future seasons. It has great material properties allowing great drainage and moisture retention. You can plant easily on both the top and the sides for amazing results. It is cost effective and it is so simple to assemble.
